AHEAD OF THE IMPLEMENTATION OF US EPA TIER 4 FINAL
ON 1 JANUARY 2015, SARAH E. SULLIVAN AND
TOM W. LUTES, CUMMINS, NORTH AMERICA, SHOW HOW
NEW EMISSIONS REDUCTION TECHNOLOGY MEANS THE
OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY IS READY.
T
he focus on safe, economical and environmentally‑friendly extraction of
oil and gas resources in North America has never been greater. The gradual
tightening of emissions regulations by the US Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA), starting with its Tier 1 standards in 2000, will soon reach ultra‑low levels
with the implementation of Tier 4 Final on 1 January 2015. This new standard for
high‑horsepower engines, those producing greater than 751 horsepower, requires a
dramatic reduction in emissions from the 2006 Tier 2 standard, including:
Ì
Particulate matter (PM) reductions of 80%.
Ì
Oxides of nitrogen (NOx) reductions of 55%.
