LNG Industry - September-2014 - page 24

Planning and safety
Samsung C&T managed to successfully complete the
project on time and within budget while maintaining a
world class safety record on site without any lost time
injury (LTI).
To better inform SLNG and coordinate with the
company throughout the project, Samsung C&T made
regular presentations detailing upcoming construction
activities and sharing critical management points
related to safety, quality and construction. This close
collaboration with the customer, as well as complete
compliance with the global top-level and local health,
safety, security and environmental (HSSE)
requirements, were the key to accomplishing
17 million safety man-hours without LTI, despite the
fact that, at peak times, the project had 2900 workers
per day.
Global LNG market
Samsung C&T has experienced various LNG terminal
and tank projects and has built nickel and membrane
tanks in both above-ground and in-ground formats.
The company is currently utilising this experience
to offer full EPC services on LNG import terminal,
pipeline, storage tank, and jetty projects all over the
world. The company has built 25% of the LNG tanks in
operation in South Korea.
In a bid to further enhance its LNG storage tank
and terminal capabilities, Samsung C&T recently
acquired Whessoe, a global top-tier firm that designs
storage tanks and import terminals. Whessoe was
founded in 1790 and is an LNG tank, terminal, and
regasification specialist that has been involved in the
designing of 6% of all LNG import terminals and 13%
of all the LNG storage tanks currently existing in the
world. In the past decade, Whessoe worked on 50 or
so LNG projects around the world, including the
Tanshan LNG project (China), the Yangling LNG
project (China), and the Manzanillo LNG tank project
(Mexico).
Through this acquisition, Samsung C&T was able
to incorporate Whessoe’s industry-leading design and
engineering expertise into its strategy and become
one of only a handful of fully independent and
comprehensive EPC players in the global LNG
industry. The acquisition also opened doors to
previously inaccessible markets in North America and
Europe and gave Samsung C&T a synergistic resource
for pursuing and bidding on high-profile LNG projects.
As the first LNG terminal project in Singapore was
a success, the Singapore government has announced
plans to build a second LNG terminal, and Samsung
C&T will be keen to win the EPC contract for this
project as well. Meanwhile, upon its successful
performance in Singapore, the company is planning
on bidding for LNG projects in other nations, such as
Malaysia or the UAE for the second half of 2014.
