he project to build Singapore’s first LNG terminal
began in February 2010, and the first pile driving of LNG
Tank 1 commenced in June 2010. The terminal entered
commercial operation 39 months later in May 2013.
The Singapore LNG terminal project is the centrepiece
of the Singapore government’s initiative for diversifying the
country’s energy sources. It will enable Singapore to import
gas from across the globe, helping to enhance the nation’s
energy security and meet future energy demand.
Global reach
The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) costs
for Singapore’s first ever LNG terminal were approximately
US$ 1 billion. It is unique in that it is capable of receiving,
storing, regasifying, sending out imported gas, and
reloading stored LNG back onto ships for re-export. The
Singapore LNG terminal project was Samsung C&T’s first
full EPC project overseas in the area of LNG terminals. It is
located on Jurong Island, an energy and chemicals hub to
the southwest of the Singapore main land.
Samsung C&T was awarded the contract in 2010 to
build an LNG terminal comprising two 180 000 m

tanks, send-out facilities and the primary jetty. In this initial
phase of development, the terminal had a total send-out
capacity of 3 million tpy, with a primary jetty that could
accommodate Q-Max LNG vessels. In October 2010,
