LONG TERM HYDROGEN CONTRACT
P
raxair, Inc. has signed a long term
contract to provide hydrogen to
Repsol, one of the world's largest
producers of petrochemicals. The new
steam methane reformer (SMR) will be
constructed at Repsol's La Pampilla
refinery, in the Callao districts, near
Lima, and is expected to start up in 2016.
The 12 million ft
3
/d SMR will use
natural gas or naphtha as feedstock for
the production of hydrogen. The La
Pampilla refinery produces gasoline,
liquid petroleum gas, jet fuel, kerosene,
diesel and asphalts, among other
products to serve the local market. The
Repsol refinery will also produce low
sulfur diesel fuel that will comply with
the strictest environmental standards
and be used to serve customers in the
local market.

COLD CRACKING TECHNOLOGY
W
ith the signing of a contract on
the use of cold cracking
technology in China, an important
breakthrough in the field of heavy oil
production and treatment has been
achieved for the participating
companies, Pristec AG and China
National Petroleum (CNPC).
Pristec AG signed with CNPC on
7
th
November an agreement that is
worth several billion US$ over a period
of 20 years for all of CNPC's refineries.
This will commence after a 90 day
validation run of the cold cracking
systems. Additionally, the agreement
provides for the use of the technology
by CNPC in all of its refineries in China
as well as in all countries where CNPC
operates or promotes heavy oil
production. Within six months,
commissioning will commence in
China's largest refinery complex which
operates with local heavy oil.
The procedure known as cold
cracking is a new; breakthrough
technology which processes heavy oils
as well as refinery residues more
efficiently without the use of chemical
or thermal methods and at the same
time provides usable products with a
far better quality over current methods.
This procedue is not only cost effective
but also environmentally friendly and
differs from methods that are currently
widely used in the extraction and
processing of petroleum.

URGENT ACTION REQUIRED
7
3% of people want world leaders to
agree a global deal and 66% think
action must happen now, according to a
new Populus survey. The survey reveals
an appetite for action on climate
change by the UK public, with only 20%
agreeing that it can wait a few years. But
the survey also showed that just 40% of
people recognise the potential impact
of climate change on their lifestyle.
Energy and Climate Change
Secretary, Ed Davey said, 'the science is
clear. Climate change poses great risks
to health, global food security and
economic development, and unchecked
will change every part of our lives.
Without urgent action nowhere on
earth will be left untouched.
'We are at a global turning point,
never before have so many countries
made clear their determination to act
to tackle climate change. Those
governments are backed by a
groundswell of people who want to see
action in their own countries and
around the world.
