September 2014
W
orld Coal
presents its monthly round up
of news from coal projects in Australia,
Canada, Indonesia, Mongolia, South Africa and
the UK.
Australia
Whitehaven Coal
Two blasts this week signalled the start of
opencast mining operations at Whitehaven Coal’s
Maules Creek project, as full-scale mining begins
at the Australian coal mine. According to the
company, the project remains on both budget
and schedule. First saleable coal is expected
to be railed from the mine in March 2015. The
company also announced its recoverable coal
reserves increased by 1 million t to 888 million t
in the 12 months to 2014 compared to its
August 2013 Coal Reserves and Resources
Statement. Its marketable coal reserves also
increased by 5 million t to 801 million t.
Canada
Jameson Resources
The first phase of an exploration programme
at Jameson Resources’ Dunlevy metallurgical
coal project in British Columbia has been
executed successfully. Seam thickness is in line
with expectations based on historical trenching
work performed on the property. The company
said it had now taken significant steps forward
in minimising project investment risk for the
2534 ha. project.
Indonesia
Cokal
Cokal has secured US$ 5.65 million of funding to
progress its BBM project in Central Kalimantan,
the company said in a statement. The funds will
be provided by Platinum Partners, a New York
based hedge fund, bringing its total investment
in the project to US$ 9.15 million.
Mongolia
Viking Mines
Viking Mines has announced that an initial
non‑binding memorandum of understanding
(MoU) has been signed between Auminco Mines
and Khutul Cement and Lime (KCLC) relating to
future potential coal supply from the Berkh Uul
coal mine. Mining is expected to begin at
Berkh Uul next year. Viking Mines is curently
in the process of taking over Auminco Mines,
with over 97% of the company’s shareholders
accepting Viking’s offer.
Erdenes Tavan Tolgoi JSC
Coal mining operations at Mongolia’s
Tavan Tolgoi mine have ground to a halt,
amid a disagreement between the mine’s
operator and contractor. Contracting firm,
Macmahon Holdings Ltd, said that operations
at the mine had been suspended due to a “a
range of disagreements” with state-owned mine
operator, Erdenes Tavan Tolgoi JSC.
South Africa
Exxaro Resources
Exxaro Resources is set to ramp up higher‑value
coal exports from its Grootegeluk coal mine,
after amending an agreement with Eskom
over the supply of coal to the delayed Medupi
power plant, which is taking much less coal than
originally agreed. Under the new agreement,
Eskomwill pay Exxaro for non-delivery of
up about 15 million t, freeing up capacity for
producing coal for export.
Universal Coal
Universal Coal has been granted mining rights
for the Brakfontein coal project in South Africa.
The project lies within 20 km of the company’s
Kangala coal mine in the Witbank coalfield and
contains a JORC-compliant thermal coal resource
of 87.6 million t, 70.5 million t in the measured
category. A feasibility study is being undertaken
and should be completed by the turn of the year.
UK
New Age Exploration
NewAge Exploration (NAE) has released
exploration results from the company’s
Lochinvar project in the border regions between
England and Scotland. A total resource of
111 million t – comprising 49 million t indicated
and 62 million t inferred – has been defined
based on nine holes drilled by the National Coal
Board (NCB) from 1979 through to 1983 and
10 holes drilled by NAE in 2013 and 2014.
