T
he focus of fleet management in any industry is to capture, measure and control. Leica’s fleet management
system (FMS), Jigsaw Jmineops, optimises the real-time scheduling and dispatch of mobile mining equipment.
Information provided by the FMS enables users to have greater control of the operations and production
environment. The system centralises equipment tracking, dispatching and diagnostics. This ensures that
activities and operators can be directed, material movement can be confirmed and machine health can be monitored. The
following case study is from a gold mine; however, the technology used and lessons learned are equally applicable in any
opencast mine.
Pueblo Viejo
The Pueblo Viejo gold mine in the Dominican Republic is operated by Barrick Gold in a joint venture with Gold Corp. The
companies hold 60% and 40% ownership, respectively. Last year was the first full year of production at the mine. Because
of this, efficient fleet management and production optimisation was a core focus.
Pueblo Viejo purchased the entire suite of Leica Jigsaw software in January of 2011 and is currently running Jmineops,
Jview, and Jhealth. Additionally, in the pit itself, mine operators have implemented Jtruck and J²guidance for high
