Japan fostered thegrowthof theLNG industry inAsiaby
being theanchormarket forexports fromBrunei, Indonesia
andMalaysia in the 1970s. Ithas reliedonadiverseportfolio
ofnations forLNGwhileheavilybankingonSoutheastAsia to
meet its requirements.Of late,Australia,QatarandRussiaare
supplyingup to50%of Japan’s imports,overtaking the
SoutheastAsian suppliers.Apart from these,PapuaNew
Guineaand theUSwillbe theother important sources for
Japan’sLNG supplies in thecomingyears.
High dependence on LNG
Japanhas to importmostof itsnaturalgas in the formof
LNG.ElectricutilitiesTokyoElectric,ChubuElectric,Kansai
Electric,andcitygasdistributioncompanies,TokyoGas,
OsakaGasandTohoGas,areamong thecountry’s largest
LNG importers.
Japanhasgasnetworksdeveloped specifically fora
servicearea.Thecitygas suppliersdelivergas tocustomers
